The adult of this species is considerably smaller at 12 to 15 in (30 to 38 cm) than the Black Angelfish at 18 to 22 in (45 to 55 cm). As previously stated, the vertical barring on the juvenile is a daffodil yellow colour, making it a much more attractive fish. It is also considerably more attractive as an adult, characterised by a charcoal grey to blackish body colour with the posterior margin of each scale having a creamy white to pale yellow edge.
